Traditional Memorial Day Celebrations

This is the time of year when we honor and pay tribute to those who have given their lives to protect us and this great country that we live in. Here are some traditional ways to honor and celebrate this important holiday.

Flags! On Memorial Day, it is customary to fly your flag at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. You can also show your patriotic pride by decorating your home in red, white, and blue!

Parades! Almost every city pays tribute with a festive Memorial Day parade. Visit your local Chamber of Commerce to see how your town is celebrating this important holiday.

Buy a Poppy! Since 1921, the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program has been making a visual connection between red poppies and the sacrifice of those who have given their lives to protect us. Hand-made by veterans, red paper poppies have been handed out across the United States on both Memorial Day and Veterans Day. All funds received go to our veteran organizations.

Moment of Remembrance You can show your support by participating in a Moment of Remembrance. Established by Congress to reiterate the true meaning of the holiday, all Americans are asked to pause what they are doing at 3 p.m. and take a moment to remember the holiday’s significance.

Family and Friends! Memorial Day reminds us to be grateful for the security and safety provided by those who have protected us and those who continue to do so today. Plan a BBQ with family, friends, and all other loved ones and show your gratitude together!
